The Bottlenose Dolphin

The most common members of the Delphinidae family, the Bottlenose dolphins are a staple of Anna Maria Island and have attracted tourists worldwide. Locals and vacationers alike come to marvel at the acrobatic feats these dolphins display from time to time.

Dolphins are active predators and have a diverse diet of fish, crustaceans, and squids. Sometimes one of our guests at our vacation rentals will be lucky enough to witness the dolphins in action. A method the dolphins use in our area is called “pin wheeling”. Dolphins in the Intracoastal Waterways may roll onto their sides with one of their flippers raised high as if to create a barrier. They encircle a large school of fish, splashing their tail flukes and forcing the school of fish to tighten until the dolphins are able to capitalize on this quick meal.

Whether you plan to come to Florida for a trip to Disney World or to beat the cold winter up North. We at Duncan Real Estate highly suggest that you include time in your vacation to appreciate the natural habitat the gulf coast of Florida. The best time to see these dolphins hunt is in the bay areas right at sunrise or sunset. Below is a clip from youtube showcasing one of their hunting techniques. Enjoy!
