Historic Pine Avenue Shops

Historic Pine Ave with Roser Church

The half mile stretch that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to Tampa Bay is home to about 25+ Pine Avenue shops and businesses. It comes with a lot of history. The first island settler George Emerson Bean called the island his home in 1892 and started developing streets, sidewalks and installing a water system. In 1911 the Anna Maria City Pier at the end of Pine Avenue was built to ferry island day visitors from nearby Tampa. Bean’s contemporary John Roser built the first church on Pine Avenue in 1913.  Shortly after came a school that lead to the beginning of an island community. A jail was built just down the street from the church in 1927 for the drunk and disorderly visitors. The roof was lost a long time ago and it now serves as popular photo op. It is part of the historic museum complex which displays many highly interesting island memorabilia.

In 1921 the first wooden bridge was built connecting the island to the mainland passing the fishing village of Cortez. Part of the original bridge is now used as the Bradenton Beach Pier. With the help of a bridge more people visited the beach and the new island era began.  Skip close to 100 years and the face of the island has changed a lot. The entire land has been developed and about 8500 residents call the barrier island their permanent home. There are families, children, singles and retirees all living here together. Let’s not forget how Anna Maria Island has become a vacation favorite among local, national and international travelers. From honeymooners to Hollywood film crews, youngsters to the young-at-heart, people from around the world have discovered this slice of paradise.

Shopping Pine Avenue

Pine Avenue Shops

With the steady flow of visitors many new shops and businesses opened up along Pine Avenue. Since many of them use environmentally-friendly practices it is also called “The Greenest Little Main Street in America”. There is even a community garden that features several edible boxed gardens located outside certain Pine Avenue destinations. Each box has an information card and a scannable QR code. Local landscape designer Michael Miller helped installing the garden which goal is to encourage people to learn more about, see and eat exotic-sounding vegetables like Okinawa spinach, edible hibiscus or moringa.  There are eateries like The Donut Experiement, Poppa’s Taqueria, Burns Pizza, Hometown Dessert to name a few. The General store, Olive Oil Outpost, Spice Merchant are other great stores to find unusual food items. Several boutiques and artsy stores like Bella by the Sea, The Island Cabana, Shiny Fish Emporium, Pink&Navy, Emerson Studio and Tide and Moon make a stroll interesting.  BeachBums is a quirky rental store that offers beach merchandise and rental equipment like bikes, golf carts and surreys. Technically not on Pine Ave but situated at the end of Pine Avenue stood the Anna Maria City Pier for more than 100 years. Hurricane Irma in 2017 caused severe damage and the pier had to be torn down with plans to be rebuilt and completed in 2019.

Duncan Real Estate is also located on the historic stretch with the address 310 Pine Avenue.

Pine Avenue Events

Trick-or-Treaters at Duncan Real Estate

Pine Avenue is a popular street for festivals and has seen its share of a lot of fun over the years. The Easter Parade is the first event of the year. It features a large than life size bunny that leads the group of kids from the SandBar Restaurant to fun, games and Easter bonnet contest to Pine Ave.

A Saturday in May was reserved for “Food and Wine on Pine” for several years until is was discontinued in 2017. It was all about celebration of food and wine found all over the island from about 20 of the area’s finest restaurants plus music, art and kids activity area.

Bayfest is a staple and the most anticipated island event. Since its inauguration in 2000 the all-day street festival has lots to offer. The classic car show always draws a big crowd starting as early as 10 am. The family friendly atmosphere features arts, crafts, music, food and a kids zone.

Holiday Walk 2017 Realtors Martha Jones, April Green

The Trail of Treats celebrates Halloween for the little ones. Businesses are welcoming Trick-or-Treaters in the afternoon hours on October 31.

Another larger street celebration is the Christmas Walk in December. Pine Avenue becomes a pedestrian zone and businesses open their doors to showcase their products and offer snacks, treats and winter themed goodies.

The yearly 4th of July, Veterans and Christmas parades also run along Pine Avenue with crows lining the street.

The Silver Kings Are Back! Bring the Tarpons on

Anna Maria Island is home to one of the best fisheries in the world and tarpon play a major role in making this area a key destination for anglers. Tarpon are a large fish that usually weigh anywhere from 60-280 lbs. They are prized as one of the top sport fish to catch. Known for their acrobatic stunts and long runs when hooked, Tarpon are a migratory fish that make their run through the waters here during the months of May and June. These fish can be found off the beaches or in the passes on the North and South end of Anna Maria island. Tarpon can be targeted using live bait, thread fin herring on an incoming tide and crabs are best on a strong outgoing tide. Be aware that these fish can be spooked quite easily. Positioning your boat strategically can be a determining factor in catching one of these beasts. Circle hooks and a long leader line are essential when rigging your fishing rod. Whether you are an avid angler or this is your first-time fishing for tarpon, Anna Maria island is your one stop shop for these marvelous fish.

Here is a few recommendations on guides in the area, 941-447-1063 is Captain Carson & 941-812-5256 for Captain Colby Gregory. Need a place to put your boat? See below for a list of all of our vacation rental homes with canal access.

Happy Hour on Anna Maria Island

Let us be your spirit-ual guide on this journey to catch a good buzz while on vacation. From dollar beers to bogo mai tais we’ve got you covered on all things happy hour. Finding a vacation rental on Anna Maria Island for Easter weekend can be a hard enough task, finding a place to drink shouldn’t be. For transportation, we suggest using the trolley and doing the local trolley crawl or calling the monkey bus. Beach cruisers are a great way to get around but after a few cold ones with the boys we don’t condone it. Catching a shark, getting a nice tan, or finding the love of your life in the back corner of Bortell’s lounge are things to brag about, getting a B.U.I. (Biking While Under the Influence) isn’t one of them.

Duffy’s Tavern is our go to for cheap beer, great burgers, and an amazing atmosphere. Closed Tuesday. A no-frills place where you order at the bar and bus your table. The beer is $1.50 for a mug or $9 for a pitcher. This spot caters to locals and travelers alike so expect it to be bustling.

From there, head North on the trolley to Harry’s bar and grill. They have a special called “Harry Hour” from 3-5 with drinks specials and live music. Tuesday night is karaoke night so if you’re feeling adventurous and feel that your singing in showers have paid off then come on down. Please call our office in advance so we don’t make the mistake of coming while you’re down there belting your heart out to Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”.

After a few drinks at Harry’s take a dive across the street at Bortell’s lounge. No clear happy hour but the drinks are cheap and the pool tables make this local hangout a box to check on our list. This is a bar, no food so make sure you eat at Harry’s or Duffy’s before or just stick with the liquid bread. Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Sunset is approaching and there’s no better place to catch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico than the Sandbar and Beach House restaurants. The Sandbar is a stone throw away from Bortell’s and the frozen drinks are on point. While watching the sunset try and see the “green flash”. According to local legends, the green flash can be seen when the top of the sun is level with the Gulf of Mexico and right when it descends below the sea, a green flash is emitted. Let us know if you see it, we’re still waiting for our chance.

The sun has set and if you played your cards right you can continue on into the night. Bridge street is where the action is at night with various bars and restaurants. Island time and Blue Marlin have the live music, Drift-in and Sports lounge are the more dive bar scenes. If you don’t fancy a trip down to Bradenton Beach we suggest you hit up the Freckled Fin, the Doctor’s Office, Hurricane Hanks, or Decoy Duck’s. All of these bars are located in or around the Holmes Beach Shopping Center. Now we can’t guarantee the drinks will be cheap after 8pm but these spots are a great time that is usually filled with live music. We hope this guide has helped you in your task of finding a place to catch a cool buzz while on vacation just like Jeff Spicoli would have intended.

Don’t forget, tipping is more than just a city in China. Tip your bartender!!!

Sunny Regards,

Ginger

Where can you find Green Beer on Anna Maria Island?!

Where’s the green beer at?

green beerFiguring out where to drink on St. Patrick’s Day can be a daunting task. Whether you’re staying at one of our vacation rentals or a resident on Anna Maria Island, we got you covered on where to go for the festivities.

Duffy’s Tavern has always been a staple on Anna Maria Island and their St. Patrick’s day celebrations do not fall short. Green beer and traditional dishes stay flowing all day Saturday to commemorate the Irish roots Duffy’s tavern was founded on. In the heart of Holmes Beach, Duffy’s Tavern is our top pick.

The newly opened Freckled Fin just around the corner is guaranteed to be a good time this Saturday. With Irish flags draped all around the edifice, we’re certain the traditional menu items will be amazing and the live music will be even better. If you can handle more than one stop on your boozy day we suggest hitting Duffy’s tavern in the day and Freckled Fin at night.

Bridge street is always known for the night life and St. Patrick’s day definitely won’t disappoint. You have options there. Hit Island Time for a cocktail, Blue Marlin for dinner, Sports for an after dinner drink, and the Drift-in if you want to keep the party going and make your Irish heritage proud.

Off the island, we got more options!  Clancy’s will be packed more than a college bar offering penny beers on game day. Ask someone in Manatee County where to go on St. Patrick’s day and we would bet our lucky 4-leaf clover that they will say Clancy’s. It’s a sight to see so grab your phone call a Lyft and head there if you want some time on the mainland. Not too far away is Paddy Wagons. A relatively new bar located next to the Anna Maria Oyster Bar on Cortez. The green beer will be flowing and the crowd won’t be as bad as Clancy’s. Downtown is your 3rd option on the mainland. They block the street off and the surrounding bars all participate. Get a different perspective on the area. Our food recommendation there is O’Bricks (the name probably gives it away but they are definitely celebrating St. Pats) or Jennings Provisions. A new small plate and wine/beer bar. Maybe they will have green Lola wine?

Enjoy Saturday Irish or not and make sure to plan on watching the St Paddy’s Day parade on the island which is Sunday, march 18th beginning at 4:00 in Holmes Beach!

You can reach Duncan Real Estate at 941.779.0304 or send us a quick message here.

Cheers!

St Paddy’s Day Parade on Anna Maria Island!

You will not want to miss out on the St Paddy’s Day Parade on Anna Maria Island.  The date is set – Sunday, March 18th beginning at 4:00 PM.  The parade will assemble in the Eat Here parking lot at Marina and Gulf Drives starting at about 2 and then travel north on Marina and Palm Drives, ending at 78th Street.

Years ago Sean Murphy loaded up his kids and neighborhood friends into an old green lawn trailer and carrying a parade permit and blasting music from a boom box, drove down the middle of Gulf Drive to the amusement of bystanders and vacationers!  This was the 1st annual Anna Maria Island St Paddy’s Day Parade, according to Murphy, the owner of three Holmes Beach establishments – Beach Bistro, Eat Here and the Doctor’s Office.

A few years later, the parade had grown to include bands and floats and to attract thousands of paradegoers!  Murphy invited everyone to “get with the St Pat Spirit” and join the parade – it is free to stroll with the bag pipers, pirates, leprechauns, marching bands and community groups.  If you want to join in the parade fun as a participant, please call the Beach Bistro at 941-778-6444.

Duncan Real Estate has been in the parade for many years.  This year, we decided to enjoy the parade from the streets and holler at all the floats and friends!  We hope to see you all there too!!!

Cheers,

Ginger

Trail of Treats was a Hit!

As I always say, Anna Maria Island always has such fun activities going on and the Anna Maria Chamber plays a big hand in this.  The Trail of Treats started at the Chamber after school with a costume contest and then the kiddos were sent out with a list of businesses on Holmes Beach, Anna Maria and Bradenton Beach that were handing out candy!

The rush started coming around 5:30 and Team Duncan was ready to roll!  We set up “shop” at our picnic table with Tootsie pops, necklaces/bracelets, and adult beverages!  Let me tell you, the adult beverages were a hit!  Over and over again, we heard that Duncan Real Estate was the best spot and most fun.  We had several groups come back by for seconds (on the adult beverages more than the candy)!

Here are a few photos of the ladies of Team Duncan that worked Trail of Treats:

LL, LS, EQEQ and CK LS and EQ

All of the kids were so cute and so polite!  We had to tell them to take two tootsie pops!  Take a look at all of the cuties we saw at the Trail of Treats!
