Beach Weddings on Anna Maria Island

Beach wedding toesIf you are not attending the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle this Saturday, May 18th you might run into another wedding party here on Anna Maria Island. Dubbed as  the “Wedding Capital of Florida” the island has become very popular for destination weddings.  Over 1000 couples per year exchange their vows on the beach. The tropical backdrop of sugar-white sand, turquoise-emerald water and spectacular sunset horizons almost guarantee a memorable dream wedding. The celebrations can range from elegant table settings to dancing barefoot in the sand. There are many great venues to choose from in this area but only a few offer the combination of having your ceremony and reception directly on the Gulf of Mexico.

Here are the best beach wedding spots:

Harrington House B&B
This charming Inn accommodates smaller wedding parties up to 24 guests. Say “I do” in the romantic gazebo or on the white sandy beach in front of the Harrington House.

BeachHouse Restaurant
Experience an exceptional tropical beach front location for a perfect combination of an all-weather deck with private pavilion, your very own bridal suite, award-winning culinary choices and a multitude of beach, deck and indoor dining options. The bridal magazine “The Knot” honored the BeachHouse with multiple picks for “Best of Weddings”.

Sandbar Restaurant
The covered pavillion is right on the beach allowing you to have your wedding or event with your toes in the sand. Over 750,000 newlyweds were surveyed by this wedding planning network.  Celebrate your wedding with your toes in the sand!

The Sunset by Gulf Drive Cafe
Picture Gulf waves and sunsets as your wedding backdrop in this waterfront venue. Located at the South end of the island, a team of experts will help planning the big day. The local newspaper Bradenton Herald honored The Sunset with several People’s Best Choice wedding awards.

In the Mood for Florida Cuisine?

Anna Maria Island Beachside DiningPlenty of restaurants on Anna Maria Island offer the Florida Cuisine that travelers are looking for. Vacationing here means to enjoy beautiful beaches during the day and unwind when dining at sunset. A popular variation is the “Floribbean Cuisine”. It combines Caribbean, Latin American,  classic American and European traditional elements with fresh Florida produce and seafood.

There are also specialty stores on Anna Maria Island that offer local products like fresh fish, the famous Florida orange juice or other citrus related products. Stop by the new Farmers Market on Pine Ave by the City Pier. It offers fresh produce every Tuesday from 11am-5pm during season. If you see jumping fish in the island canals it is probably mullet. Smoked mullet is a delicacy that should be on your shopping list. Enjoy it on a great lunch sandwich or as cold dinner spread.

Here are other area typical items that you will find on the Anna Maria Island restaurant menus.

Conch Fritters: This edible marine mollusk has a mild and sweet clam-like flavor. You can order a fried version in ball shape or a tomato-based conch chowder. Pronounce it “konk” to sound like a local!

Cuban Sandwich: Derived from the influence of Cuban immigrants this tasty sandwich is a favorite lunch menu item. A buttered Cuban bread comes with sliced pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles, will then be heated and flattened with a sandwich press for a crunchy treat.

Florida Lobster: It is also called spiny or rock lobster, has no claws and offers the best meat in the tail.

Grits:  Made from hominy or coarsely ground corn grits are part of a good, old-fashioned Southern breakfast.  Cheese grits are often served as side dish for dinner.

Grouper: This is probably the most popular fish. It is firm and white and served in many variations: grilled, blackened, fried, grouper fingers, seafood quesadillas and in fish tacos. Some dishes are offered at market price. Please ask before ordering!

Gulf Shrimp: The Gulf of Mexico shrimp is tender and sweet.  Restaurants offer them in endless variations.

Hush Puppies: They are cornmeal fritters that are served as a side at lunch or dinner with seafood items like fried fish, oysters, shrimp or scallops.

Key Lime Pie: Key limes are the yellow variety from the Florida Keys which tart flavor gives a Key Lime pie the delicious taste. A Must dessert when visiting Anna Maria Island.

Mahi Mahi: Also known as Dorado or dolphin fish is a lean, sweet fish. Try the Rod ‘n Reel Pier Restaurant for lunch and order their superb Mahi-Mahi sandwich.

Snapper: The Florida Red snapper is the other favorite next to Grouper and is served pan-seared, crab-stuffed, cashew-encrusted, barbecued, baked or grilled.

Stone Crab Claws: During October through May local fishermen will set their traps. The crabs are de-clawed and returned to sea, therefore preserving a bountiful supply of claws for next seasons to come.

Where can you find Green Beer on Anna Maria Island?!

Where’s the green beer at?

green beerFiguring out where to drink on St. Patrick’s Day can be a daunting task. Whether you’re staying at one of our vacation rentals or a resident on Anna Maria Island, we got you covered on where to go for the festivities.

Duffy’s Tavern has always been a staple on Anna Maria Island and their St. Patrick’s day celebrations do not fall short. Green beer and traditional dishes stay flowing all day Saturday to commemorate the Irish roots Duffy’s tavern was founded on. In the heart of Holmes Beach, Duffy’s Tavern is our top pick.

The newly opened Freckled Fin just around the corner is guaranteed to be a good time this Saturday. With Irish flags draped all around the edifice, we’re certain the traditional menu items will be amazing and the live music will be even better. If you can handle more than one stop on your boozy day we suggest hitting Duffy’s tavern in the day and Freckled Fin at night.

Bridge street is always known for the night life and St. Patrick’s day definitely won’t disappoint. You have options there. Hit Island Time for a cocktail, Blue Marlin for dinner, Sports for an after dinner drink, and the Drift-in if you want to keep the party going and make your Irish heritage proud.

Off the island, we got more options!  Clancy’s will be packed more than a college bar offering penny beers on game day. Ask someone in Manatee County where to go on St. Patrick’s day and we would bet our lucky 4-leaf clover that they will say Clancy’s. It’s a sight to see so grab your phone call a Lyft and head there if you want some time on the mainland. Not too far away is Paddy Wagons. A relatively new bar located next to the Anna Maria Oyster Bar on Cortez. The green beer will be flowing and the crowd won’t be as bad as Clancy’s. Downtown is your 3rd option on the mainland. They block the street off and the surrounding bars all participate. Get a different perspective on the area. Our food recommendation there is O’Bricks (the name probably gives it away but they are definitely celebrating St. Pats) or Jennings Provisions. A new small plate and wine/beer bar. Maybe they will have green Lola wine?

Enjoy Saturday Irish or not and make sure to plan on watching the St Paddy’s Day parade on the island which is Sunday, march 18th beginning at 4:00 in Holmes Beach!

You can reach Duncan Real Estate at 941.779.0304 or send us a quick message here.

Cheers!

A great spot to gather on Anna Maria Island!

I had the best day yesterday on Anna Maria Island!  I got to see about 10-12 of my friends from high school and it had been awhile since I have seen some of them.  We all decided to meet at the AMOB Pier at the end on Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach.  What a perfect place to meet.

All of us got there around 5:00 PM and to our surprise, they had the BEST happy hour deals!!!  $4.00 call liquors, .50 off beer and wines, and buy one appetizer and get one half off!  Let me tell you, we all took full advantage of all of these deals.  I had a frozen wine – yes, I said frozen wine.  It was a Kim Crawford blend with a grapefruit/jalepeno vodka.  Does it get much better than that!?  We all ordered different appetizers so that we could share and sample a bunch of them.  My favorite was the smoked fish dip and the calamari!!

I would highly suggest trying the AMOB Pier on Bridge Street anytime.  They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner!  And I still have not even mentioned the view – you can sit inside or enjoy the covered outdoor sitting area right on the bay! We had to sit inside because you know those Florida summer rains – it started to pour!  Check out the website for AMOB Pier!  http://www.oysterbar.net

It is all about networking!

I started the New Year off right by attending the first networking lunch of the year with the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce.  It was great to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  Networking is so important.  You are able to promote your business as well as support other local businesses.  It is all about working together.  And I can say with experience that it works!  Duncan Real Estate has gotten many referrals from the Anna Maria Island Chamber for vacation rentals and customers that are looking to buy or sell a home!  Gotta love that.  And thanks to En Rich Bistro for a fantastic lunch…I will be sure to go back!

My goal this year is to attend as many networking functions as I can….it can only help!  If you would like to join me, let me know!

Sunny Regards,

Great food AND they Deliver!

I woke up on this rainy morning craving a breakfast sandwich, but didn’t want to leave my house.  I know you have felt that way before.  Thankfully, there is a great place on Anna Maria Island that serves breakfast and lunch AND they deliver!   So I called Scott’s Deli, placed my order and it was delivered to my front door step about 15 minutes later.  I would recommend the steak and eggs breakfast sandwich.  YUMMY

If you live on AMI, Scott’s Deli offers a locals discount on Wednesdays.  Does it get any better?  Why yes it does.  Scott’s Deli will even deliver to you on the beach.

Now that my tummy is full, it is time for me to take a nap listening to the waves crash on this rainy Saturday.  Make sure you give Scott’s Deli a call!
